BOE is trying to lure Samsung with lower-priced Galaxy S27 series OLED panels

Samsung’s Galaxy S27 Might Ditch the “All-Samsung” Display Tradition

For years, the Samsung Galaxy S series has been a showcase for the company’s own cutting-edge display technology. However, that long-standing tradition might be about to change. Recent whispers from Korea suggest that display manufacturer BOE is aggressively bidding to become a secondary supplier for the Galaxy S27 OLED panels, aiming to break Samsung Display’s exclusive grip on the flagship lineup.

A $5 Saving That Could Change Everything

According to a report from ZDNET Korea, BOE has put a tempting offer on the table. They are reportedly pitching their OLED panels at a price point roughly $5 lower per unit than what Samsung Display currently charges. While five dollars might sound like pocket change, when you’re manufacturing millions of flagship devices, those savings add up to a massive boost for the bottom line of Samsung’s Mobile eXperience (MX) division.

It is not just a theoretical pitch, either. Samsung has reportedly been putting BOE’s samples through their paces for over a month. Early word from industry insiders suggests the panels are meeting the high technical standards required for a flagship device, with no major technical hurdles currently standing in the way of a potential deal.

The Internal Tug-of-War

This potential shift brings some interesting internal politics into play. While the mobile division (MX) is naturally looking for ways to cut costs and improve margins, bringing in an outside supplier like BOE could ruffle feathers at Samsung Display. Moving away from an all-internal supply chain could disrupt the OLED ecosystem Samsung has spent decades building, potentially impacting the profitability of their own display wing and its various component partners.

We have already seen Samsung lean on outside help for its more affordable hardware—the upcoming Galaxy A57, for example, is expected to use panels from TCL CSOT. However, the Galaxy S line has always been the “gold standard” for internal synergy. If BOE manages to break into the S27 supply chain, it would mark a significant shift in how Samsung approaches its most premium hardware. Whether Samsung prioritizes internal loyalty or the financial benefits of a cheaper supply chain remains to be seen, but the pressure is clearly mounting.
