The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Wide is rumored to miss out on a 200MP camera
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Wide: Is It a Pro-Level Foldable or Just a Beefed-Up Flip?
Samsung seems to be carving out a new niche in the foldable market with the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold Wide. Positioned as the middle child between the compact Z Flip and the powerhouse Z Fold, this device aims to offer a wider, more traditional screen aspect ratio than the Z Fold8’s square-ish proportions. But as more leaks surface, we’re starting to see exactly where Samsung is cutting corners to keep it from overshadowing its flagship sibling.
The Camera: A 50MP Reality Check
If you were hoping the Z Fold Wide would inherit the massive 200MP sensor rumored for the Z Fold8, I have some bad news. Recent reports from GalaxyClub and SamMobile suggest the Wide will stick with a 50MP f/1.8 main camera. In terms of raw hardware, this puts it much closer to the Flip series than the top-tier Fold.
However, it isn’t all bad news. The ultra-wide camera is reportedly getting a significant bump to a 50MP sensor with an f/1.9 lens. This actually puts it on par with the Z Fold8 and gives it a clear edge over the Galaxy Z Flip8, which is rumored to be stuck with a measly 12MP ultra-wide unit.
The Zoom Dilemma
One of the biggest sacrifices here is the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens. While the Z Fold8 is expected to sport a new 12MP 3x zoom module, the Z Fold Wide will only feature two cameras on its back. If Samsung had gone with a 200MP main sensor, they could have easily offered high-quality digital cropping for 2x or 4x shots. With a 50MP sensor, you can expect the zoom quality to be roughly the same as what you’d get on a Z Flip8—functional, but hardly professional-grade.
Better Battery Life in Sight
On the bright side, the Z Fold Wide isn’t skimping on endurance. Leaks indicate it will pack a 4,800mAh battery. That’s a healthy jump from the 4,400mAh found in the Z Fold7. While it still trails behind the 5,000mAh expected in the Z Fold8, it’s a massive improvement over the Z Flip series, which seems to be stuck in the low 4,000s for another year.
Final Polish and Release Date
The design looks to be getting some subtle refinements as well. Both the Z Fold Wide and Z Fold8 are expected to feature smaller punch-hole cutouts for their 10MP selfie cameras, giving the internal and external screens a cleaner, more immersive look.
So, when can we expect to see these in the flesh? While nothing is set in stone, the rumor mill is pointing toward a July 22nd date for the next Samsung Galaxy Unpacked event. If you’ve been waiting for a foldable that’s easier to type on but doesn’t cost the earth, the Wide might be the one to watch.
