Moto G Max silently launches as a rebranded Moto G87

Motorola’s Moto G87 Re-Emerges as the Moto G Max in Brazil

Motorola has a habit of keeping the tech world on its toes with its naming conventions, and its latest move in Brazil is no exception. If the newly announced Moto G Max looks familiar, that’s because it is. This is essentially the Moto G87, which originally debuted in late April, now sporting a fresh alias for the Brazilian market.

Available through Motorola’s official Brazilian online store, the Moto G Max is priced at BRL 2,519.10—which works out to approximately $488. While the name has changed, the impressive hardware that made the G87 a standout remains fully intact.

Display and Durability That Punches Above Its Weight

So, what are you getting for your money? For starters, the Moto G Max features a stunning 6.8-inch AMOLED display. It’s not just big; it’s incredibly bright, boasting a peak brightness of 5,000 nits. Whether you’re under direct sunlight or binge-watching in the dark, the 1.5K resolution and 120Hz refresh rate ensure everything looks crisp and fluid. Motorola didn’t skimp on protection either, wrapping the screen in Gorilla Glass 7i.

Interestingly, this phone is built like a tank. It carries IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings, meaning it can handle dust, high-pressure water jets, and full immersion. It even meets MIL-STD-810H standards for ruggedness, making it one of the more durable mid-range options on the market.

A Massive 200MP Camera Experience

The real star of the show is the camera housing. The Moto G Max packs a 200MP main sensor with an f/1.8 aperture and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). This is a significant leap for the G-series, offering detail levels usually reserved for flagship territory. Complementing the main lens is an 8MP ultrawide camera, while a 32MP front-facing snapper handles selfies and video calls.

Performance, Battery, and Software

Under the hood, the device runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 6400 chipset, paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage. It’s a solid configuration that should handle daily multitasking and moderate gaming with ease. Keeping the lights on is a beefy 5,200 mAh battery that supports 33W fast wired charging.

On the software side, the Moto G Max is impressively up-to-date, running Android 16 right out of the box. Other notable features include:

  • Stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support for immersive audio
  • An in-display fingerprint sensor for sleek security
  • A slim profile at just 7.38mm despite the large battery
  • A lightweight 183g build that won’t feel like a brick in your pocket

While rebranding the same hardware for different regions is a standard industry tactic, it does lead to some confusion for global shoppers. Whether the “Moto G Max” branding will travel to other countries or remain a Brazilian exclusive is still a mystery, but for now, it stands as a high-spec, durable option for the South American market.
