The race for global satellite internet is heating up. Amazon has been quietly building out its own Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite network, known internally as Project Kuiper, and they are finally reaching a pivotal milestone. If you’ve been keeping an eye on the space industry, it’s clear this is a direct challenge to SpaceX’s Starlink, which currently dominates the market.
Chris Weber, the VP overseeing the project, recently dropped an update confirming that over 390 satellites are now in orbit. According to Weber, this is enough to provide consistent service across their initial target latitudes. The team has effectively cleared the necessary launch hurdles to begin rolling out services, with a firm goal of making the network commercially available by the end of 2026.

Three Tiers of Satellite Internet
Amazon isn’t taking a one-size-fits-all approach to hardware. They’ve announced three distinct receiver options designed to suit different connectivity needs:
- The Nano: Measuring 7″ x 7″, this entry-level receiver is capable of download speeds up to 100Mbps.
- The Pro: Stepping up to 11″ x 11″, this mid-range option boosts potential speeds to 400Mbps.
- The Ultra: The heavy-hitter at 20″ x 30″, designed for high-performance needs with speeds reaching up to 1Gbps.
