RCS end-to-end encryption between iPhones and Android devices is now live
The Green vs. Blue Bubble War Just Got a Lot More Secure
Let’s be honest: the bridge between iPhone and Android messaging has always felt a little flimsy. While Apple finally embraced RCS (Rich Communication Services) back with iOS 18, there was still a massive elephant in the room. Even though we could finally send high-res photos and see typing indicators, those cross-platform conversations weren’t actually end-to-end encrypted. Until now.
With the release of iOS 26.5, that security gap is officially closing. This update brings full end-to-end encryption (E2EE) to RCS chats between iOS and Android devices, making your cross-platform conversations just as private as an iMessage or a WhatsApp thread.
How It Works
This isn’t just an Apple-side fix. Google has played a major role in this interoperability, ensuring that users on the latest version of Google Messages can communicate securely with their iPhone-using friends. The best part? You don’t really have to do anything to get it working.
- Look for the Lock: You’ll notice a new lock icon appearing in your RCS chats. That’s your visual cue that nobody—not Apple, not Google, and not your carrier—can read what you’re sending in transit.
- Automatic Activation: Encryption will be the default for all new chats. For your existing threads, the feature will be automatically enabled over time as the rollout reaches more users.
- Carrier Check: It is worth noting that this feature depends on carrier support. While most major providers are already on board, Apple maintains a verified list of compatible networks to ensure a smooth experience.
It’s a significant win for mobile privacy. Whether you’re a die-hard iPhone fan or an Android loyalist, the days of sacrificing security just to talk to your friends on the other side are finally coming to an end. This update makes the messaging experience feel unified, modern, and—most importantly—safe.
