WhatsApp Update: What You Need to Know About ‘View Once’ Text Messages
WhatsApp Brings ‘View Once’ Text Messages to iOS
If you have ever wanted to send a message that disappears the second it is read, WhatsApp is currently cooking up a new feature that might be exactly what you need. After rolling out this functionality for photos, videos, and even voice notes, the team is now testing a “view once” mode specifically for text messages on iOS.
The concept is simple: once the recipient opens your message, it vanishes from their chat entirely, leaving no trace behind. It’s a great way to handle sensitive info or just keep your chats a bit cleaner.
How it works
Using the feature is designed to be intuitive. When the update lands, all you will need to do is long-press the Send button. This will trigger an option to “Send as view once.” Once you select that, your message is ready to be sent with a self-destruct timer already active.
Here is what you need to know about the current rollout:
- Cross-Platform Scope: After starting tests on Android earlier this month, the feature is officially moving over to iOS testing.
- Chat Compatibility: It will work in both private one-on-one conversations and group chats, though it is currently not slated for use within WhatsApp Channels.
- Development Phase: As of now, this is still being tested internally by developers. It has not hit public beta yet, so keep an eye out for future updates.
It is important to note that this is distinct from the standard “disappearing messages” feature. While that tool expires messages after a set duration (like 24 hours or seven days), this new mode focuses on a single-instance view. Once the recipient sees it, it is gone for good.
Stay tuned for more updates on when this might reach the main public build. It looks like WhatsApp is working hard to ensure that every type of media—from voice clips to plain text—can be sent with that extra layer of ephemeral privacy.
