Huawei nova 16 and 16 Pro announced with 7,000mAh batteries, 50MP RYYB periscopes
Huawei’s nova 16 Series Arrives: Big Batteries, Satellite Tech, and a Bold New Look
Huawei’s nova series has always been the playground for the brand’s most adventurous designs, and the new 16th generation doesn’t hold back. Whether you love or hate the new “spectacles” camera island on the Pro, it’s bound to be the talk of the town. But beyond the aesthetics, Huawei has packed these mid-rangers with serious hardware: massive batteries, upgraded RYYB sensors, and satellite messaging across the board.
The Huawei nova 16 Pro: A 200MP Powerhouse
The star of the show is undoubtedly the Huawei nova 16 Pro. It features a beast of a main camera: a 200MP 1/1.28” RYYB sensor behind an f/1.8 OIS lens. If you’re into mobile photography, that RYYB tech is a big deal for low-light performance. It’s paired with a 50MP ultra-wide that doubles as a macro lens, capable of focusing as close as 7cm.
The telephoto lens is where things get really interesting. You get a 50MP RYYB sensor with 3.7x optical zoom and OIS. Compared to the 12MP zoom on the previous generation, this is a massive leap in clarity for long-distance shots. Up front, the familiar pill-shaped cutout returns, housing a 50MP selfie camera and a specialized spectral sensor for more natural skin tones.
Display and Build Quality
The Pro model keeps the premium 6.84” LTPO panel we’ve come to expect. It offers a smooth 1-120Hz refresh rate and 2,160Hz PWM dimming to keep eye strain at bay. For peace of mind, Huawei has once again used its ultra-tough Kunlun glass to protect the screen.
The standard Huawei nova 16 is slightly more compact with a 6.68” OLED display. It’s still plenty fast at 120Hz, but it uses aluminosilicate glass instead of the Kunlun branding found on the Pro.
What’s Under the Hood?
Interestingly, both phones share the same Kirin 9010S chipset. While we’ve seen this silicon before, it’s a reliable performer, especially with the vapor chamber cooling Huawei has tucked inside. Both models also come standard with 12GB of RAM, though the Pro offers an optional 1TB storage tier for the digital hoarders among us.
The real headline, however, is the battery. Both phones are rocking 7,000mAh cells. In a world where 5,000mAh is the standard, this should provide legendary endurance. When you do run low, the 100W SuperCharge will get you back in the game quickly, though you’ll have to stick to cables as there is no wireless charging here.
Connectivity and Key Features
- Satellite Messaging: Previously reserved for the Ultra models, BeiDou satellite messaging is now standard on both the nova 16 and 16 Pro.
- Connectivity: You’re getting the latest standards, including dual-band Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6.0, and Huawei’s StarFlash technology.
- Durability: Both carry an IP65 rating—fine for a rain shower, but don’t go dropping them in the pool.
- Biometrics: In a curious move, both models now feature side-mounted fingerprint readers. It’s a departure from the under-display tech on the 15 Pro, which some might consider a step back.
Pricing and Availability
The Huawei nova 16 starts at approximately $445 (€380) for the 256GB version. If you want the Pro, prices start at roughly $575 (€495), climbing up to $740 (€635) for the 1TB flagship variant. Both are available in a stylish palette including Clear Blue, Iridescent Mother of Pearl, Sky White, and Starry Night Black.
With these specs, Huawei is clearly positioning the nova 16 series as a bridge between the mid-range and the flagship world, focusing on the features that matter most: battery life, camera resolution, and reliable connectivity.
