CTIA Wireless 2004 live coverage
A Trip Down Memory Lane: Highlights from CTIA Wireless 2004
Looking back at 2004 feels like a lifetime ago in the tech world. It was a time when the mobile industry was exploding with experimental designs and genuine innovation. At the heart of it all was CTIA Wireless in Atlanta, Georgia—the absolute powerhouse of US telecom trade shows. From hardware manufacturers to the software developers just beginning to imagine the mobile web, everyone who mattered was there.
Our colleagues over at PhoneArena did some incredible work covering the floor, giving us a front-row seat to the devices that would eventually pave the way for the smartphones we carry today. For those of us who grew up on GSM networks, this specific show was a goldmine of iconic hardware.
The Standout Gear
What made 2004 so special was the variety. Phones weren’t just black glass rectangles yet; they had personality, mechanical hinges, and distinct styles. The showroom floor was packed with hardware that pushed the boundaries of what a handheld device could actually do.
- Nokia’s Dominance: The Finnish giant brought the heat with the 9500 Communicator—a true productivity beast—and the uniquely styled 7610.
- Motorola’s Bold Experiments: Motorola was busy showing off the MPx and MPx100, alongside the A840 and the swivel-capable V80. These were devices that turned heads and started conversations.
- Siemens’ Solid Lineup: Siemens was also a major player back then, showcasing a whole suite of 66-series devices like the CX66, S66, and the rugged M66.
It is easy to forget how much excitement surrounded these launches. Seeing live photos of a Siemens S66 or a Nokia 9500 for the first time was a huge deal for tech enthusiasts. If you’re feeling nostalgic or just want to see the roots of modern mobile tech, the original deep-dive coverage is still a fascinating read. It serves as a great reminder of how far we’ve come—and how much fun the industry used to have with design.
