Oppo may offer a 100MP 1:1 selfie camera on an upcoming phone

Is Oppo Planning a 100MP Selfie Revolution?

Remember those rumors back in February about Oppo and Huawei flirting with square sensors? It looks like those whispers are finally turning into something more substantial. If the latest leaks are anything to go by, Oppo might be about to change the way we think about the front-facing camera.

The Power of the Square Sensor

According to new reports surfacing on Weibo, a major Android player is currently putting a 1:1 square sensor through its paces for a selfie camera. While the leak didn’t explicitly name names, the emojis used by the tipster practically scream “Oppo.”

But why a square sensor? It is all about convenience. Apple already introduced this concept with the iPhone 17 series using an 18MP sensor. The logic is simple: because the sensor is a perfect square, you can snap portrait or landscape shots without ever having to rotate your phone. The camera simply crops the frame based on how you are holding it, giving you high-quality results either way.

Pushing the Megapixel Limit

Here is where it gets interesting. While Apple’s solution is practical, Oppo seems to be taking the “bigger is better” approach. The leak suggests this new sensor will be a massive 100MP unit. If true, this would be a significant technical leap over the 18MP sensor found in the iPhone 17 lineup, potentially offering much higher detail and better performance in tricky lighting.

When Can We Expect It?

While we have not seen official specs yet, all signs point toward the Oppo Find X10 series as the debut platform for this hardware. With an expected launch window around October, we may not have to wait much longer to see if Oppo can actually pull off a 100MP selfie powerhouse that makes the “phone-flip” a thing of the past.
