Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and 4 Gen 5 announced, promise smoother UI, improved battery life
Qualcomm Expands the Gen 5 Lineup: Meet the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and 4 Gen 5
Qualcomm started its latest generation with a bang last year, launching the flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite and the standard 8 Gen 5. Now, the company is bringing that same energy to the phones most people actually buy. Enter the Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 and Snapdragon 4 Gen 5—two new chips designed to make mid-range and entry-level phones feel faster, last longer, and handle games without breaking a sweat.
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5: Faster Speeds, Odd Trade-offs
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 5 (model SM6850) is all about balance, but it comes with a few surprises. Qualcomm is leaning heavily into its Adaptive Performance Engine 4.0 and Adaptive Performance FPS 3.0. In plain English? This means your frame rates should stay rock-steady while gaming, and with Snapdragon Game Super Resolution, you can upscale your visuals without draining your battery in twenty minutes.
Under the hood, we see a significant shift in CPU architecture. Moving away from the lopsided core count of the Gen 4, the new chip features four performance cores clocked at up to 2.6GHz. This should lead to a much snappier experience during everyday multitasking. The Adreno GPU gets a healthy 21% boost, while power efficiency is up by about 8%.
The Specs at a Glance:
- Process: TSMC 4nm node
- Memory: Supports LPDDR5 (up to 3,200MHz) and UFS 3.1 storage
- Display: 1080p+ resolution at a buttery-smooth 144Hz
- UI: New “Smooth Motion UI” promises 20% faster app launches
However, it’s not all upgrades. Curiously, Qualcomm dropped the triple ISP from the previous generation in favor of a dual ISP. It still supports 200MP sensors and 4K video, but the real head-scratcher is the connectivity. The 5G modem loses mmWave support, and the USB-C compatibility has been dialed back to USB 2.0 speeds. It seems Qualcomm is betting that users in this segment care more about raw speed than high-speed data transfers or desktop-mode docking.
The Snapdragon 4 Gen 5: A Budget Gamer’s Dream?
While the 6-series is a solid evolution, the Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 (SM4850) might actually be the more exciting release for budget-conscious buyers. The headline here is a massive 77% jump in GPU performance. This is officially the first 4-series chip capable of handling 90fps gaming, which is a huge win for affordable smartphones.
Qualcomm is also introducing “Dual SIM Dual Active” 5G + 5G/4G support here. This allows your phone to stay connected to two networks simultaneously—a feature usually reserved for much more expensive silicon. The CPU gets a modest bump to 2.4GHz, and the new Smooth Motion UI claims to slash screen stutter by 25%.
There is a bit of a “RAMpocalypse” happening here, though. While the Gen 4 chip supported LPDDR5, the new Gen 5 is capped at LPDDR4X. On the bright side, the video encoder has finally been upgraded to handle 4K resolution, and it can now drive 144Hz displays.
What to Expect Next
So, when can you get your hands on these? Qualcomm has confirmed that the first wave of devices powered by these chips will hit the market in the second half of this year. Familiar names like Honor, Oppo, Realme, and Redmi are already confirmed to be working on new hardware featuring this silicon.
Whether you’re looking for a mid-range workhorse or a budget-friendly gaming device, these new chips suggest that the “affordable” segment is about to get a lot more capable, even if we have to live with a few quirky downgrades in the connectivity department.
