MediaTek unveils Dimensity 8550 with LLM Booster and support for Gemini Nano V3
MediaTek Just Dropped the Dimensity 8550: What You Need to Know
MediaTek isn’t wasting any time. Just a few months after revealing the Dimensity 8500, the company has already rolled out an updated version: the Dimensity 8550. While it maintains the powerful foundation of its predecessor, this refresh is all about making your phone smarter and faster when it comes to on-device intelligence.
The Big Upgrade: Gemini Nano V3 and LLM Boosting
The standout feature of the Dimensity 8550 is the addition of a dedicated LLM Booster. MediaTek is leaning hard into the AI trend by providing native support for Google’s Gemini Nano V3. Because this is designed to run directly on your hardware rather than relying on the cloud, you can expect snappier, more private AI interactions for things like text summarization, smart replies, and image processing.
Despite these smart upgrades, the chip still utilizes the NPU 880 to handle the heavy lifting of machine learning tasks.
Raw Performance and Speed
Under the hood, the Dimensity 8550 is built on TSMC’s efficient 4nm (N4P) process. It sticks with the “all-big-core” architecture that made the 8500 interesting, featuring eight Cortex-A725 cores. Here is how the power is distributed:
- Primary Core: 1x Cortex-A725 clocked at a brisk 3.4GHz (with 1MB L2 cache).
- Performance Cluster: 3x Cortex-A725 at up to 3.2GHz (each with 512KB L2 cache).
- Efficiency Cluster: 4x Cortex-A725 running at 2.2GHz (each with 256KB L2 cache).
On the graphics side, the Mali-G720 MC8 GPU returns. It’s more than capable of driving 1440p+ displays at refresh rates up to 144Hz, making it a solid choice for mobile gamers. It also handles 4K video recording at 60fps and supports the efficient AV1 decoding standard.
Connectivity and Memory
MediaTek has ensured this chip stays future-proof by supporting ultra-fast LPDDR5X RAM (hitting speeds of 9,600Mbps) and snappy UFS 4 storage. For connectivity, you’re looking at a 5G modem with dual SIM dual active (DSDA) capabilities, alongside Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.4.
First Device: The Honor 600 Pro
We won’t have to wait long to see this silicon in the wild. The new Honor 600 Pro, which recently debuted in China, is the first smartphone to officially ship with the Dimensity 8550. It sets a high bar for what we can expect from high-end mid-range devices throughout the rest of the year.
Whether you’re a mobile gamer or someone who wants the latest AI tools at your fingertips, the Dimensity 8550 looks like a very capable heart for the next generation of Android flagship-killers.
