AT&T’s Build-A-Plan lets you pick and choose what you need and how much you pay

AT&T’s New Build-A-Plan: Finally, a Wireless Subscription You Can Actually Control

Let’s be honest: choosing a wireless plan usually feels like picking the lesser of two evils. You either pay for way more data than you’ll ever use, or you’re constantly refreshing your usage meter to avoid a massive overage charge. AT&T seems to have noticed the frustration, because they’re launching a new ‘Build-A-Plan’ option designed to give you back some control.

Starting May 27, this online-only offer lets you piece together a 30-day rolling subscription that fits your lifestyle—and your budget—without the usual fluff.

The Foundation: Starting at Just $15

The Build-A-Plan experience kicks off with a $15 per month base. This gets you the essentials: unlimited talk, unlimited text, and a modest 1GB of data to keep you connected. From there, it’s basically a digital buffet. You decide how much extra data you need based on your monthly habits.

Pick Your Data Level

Whether you’re a casual browser or a 4K streamer, there’s a tier for you. Here’s how the add-ons break down:

  • The Casual User: Add 5GB for $5 or 15GB for $10. Just a heads-up: if you hit your limit here, your speeds drop to 128kbps for the rest of the term.
  • The Streamer: $20 gets you unlimited data with SD streaming (2Mbps on 5G, 1.5Mbps elsewhere).
  • The Power User: $35 for unlimited data with UHD streaming. This tier is uncapped, meaning you get the fastest speeds AT&T can deliver at any given moment.

Need a Hotspot?

If you’re someone who works from coffee shops or needs a backup for your tablet, you can add hotspot data separately. While the base plan doesn’t include it by default, you can grab 5GB for $5, 25GB for $15, or a beefy 50GB for $20.

The Fine Print

Before you jump in, there are two main requirements to keep in mind. First, this is a “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) situation—you’ll need an unlocked smartphone. Second, your phone must support eSIM. Since this is an online-only offering, physical SIM cards are sitting this one out.

It’s a refreshing take on the traditional wireless model. Instead of being locked into a rigid contract, you’re only paying for the gigabytes you actually intend to use.
