Sony WH-1000X The ColleXion bring premium design and updated drivers
A Decade of Silence: Sony Unveils the Ultra-Premium WH-1000X ‘The ColleXion’
Sony’s WH-1000X series has essentially become the gold standard for noise-canceling headphones. It’s hard to believe, but the journey started nearly ten years ago with the original MDR-1000X. To celebrate that milestone, Sony is launching a new flagship that sits at the very top of their lineup. True to form, Sony hasn’t gone for a simple name—instead, we have the WH-1000X The ColleXion (pronounced ‘The Collection’).
While these headphones share some DNA with the upcoming WH-1000XM6, The ColleXion is clearly aimed at the luxury market, swapping out some of the standard materials for a much more premium feel.
Built for Comfort and Style
Sony decided to go back to its roots with the design. The ear cup housings are wrapped in synthetic leather, a direct nod to the look of the original MDR-1000X. They’ve also tweaked the ergonomics; the ear pads are now wider and deeper, and the headband has been beefed up to make those long listening sessions a bit more manageable.
Structurally, you’re looking at stainless steel yokes (the hinges) that flow seamlessly into the top of the headband. One thing to note for the frequent flyers: these don’t fold down into a compact ball. Just like the WH-1000XM5, they only swivel flat. Sony is, however, throwing in a redesigned carrying case that features a built-in grip handle for easier transport.
On the left ear cup, you’ll find three physical buttons. Along with the standard power and ANC/Ambient mode toggles, there’s a new dedicated switch for spatial audio modes.
Under the Hood: Sound and Tech
While the 30mm driver size matches the XM6, The ColleXion uses specialized “soft-edge” drivers designed to deliver punchier bass and even more effective noise cancellation. Sony also claims they’ve overhauled the internal circuit board. By using a thicker copper substrate, they’ve managed to pull out more detail, creating a wider soundstage and more depth than we’ve heard in previous models.
The tech suite is equally impressive:</n
- 360 Upmix: Spatial audio profiles tailored for gaming, movies, and music.
- DSEE Ultimate: AI-driven upscaling to rescue those lost frequencies in compressed audio.
- V3 Integrated Processor: Working alongside the QN3 chip for superior sound processing and ANC.
- Precision Voice Pickup: 12 microphones total, using beamforming to keep your calls crystal clear.
To ensure the tuning was spot on, Sony collaborated with mastering engineers from legendary studios like Sterling Sound and Battery Studios. The goal? A sound profile that stays true to what the artist actually intended.
The Trade-off: Battery and Pricing
Interestingly, all this high-end hardware comes with a slight penalty in battery life. The ColleXion is rated for 24 hours of playback with ANC turned on (32 hours with it off). That’s a bit of a step down from the WH-1000XM6, which offers 30 and 40 hours respectively. It seems the extra processing power and premium drivers require a bit more juice.
Then there’s the price. Launching at $649 / €629 / £549, these are positioned as a serious investment—about $200 more than the standard XM6. They’ll be available in classic Black and White finishes. If you’re a dedicated audiophile or a Sony loyalist looking for the absolute pinnacle of their noise-canceling tech, The ColleXion is officially the new king of the mountain.
