Amazon probably isn’t working on a phone after all

Is Amazon Planning a Smartphone Comeback? Here’s the Latest From Panos Panay

Remember the Amazon Fire Phone? If you don’t, Amazon probably prefers it that way. Launched back in 2014, the Fire Phone was—to put it mildly—a total flop. It was such a cautionary tale that the retail giant has steered clear of the smartphone market for a decade. However, tech enthusiasts were buzzing this past March when rumors suggested Amazon might be pivoting back into the hardware game with a new, AI-powered device.

If you’ve been holding your breath for an ‘Alexa Phone,’ you might want to exhale. Panos Panay, Amazon’s head of consumer electronics, recently addressed these rumors, and his response was a classic blend of corporate caution and cryptic insight.

The Verdict: “Right Now, No”

In a recent conversation with the Financial Times, Panay didn’t exactly shut the door and lock it, but he certainly isn’t inviting us in. When asked point-blank about the development of an Amazon phone, he admitted there isn’t a “clear path that makes sense” for the company in that specific space at the moment.

Instead of a simple “yes” or “no,” Panay offered a more nuanced take on how Amazon views the future of mobile tech:

“It’s just not the goal. I know there’s a lot of rumors out there. I don’t think the phone form factor is going away anytime soon… but I think the phone is going through some transformation. If I black and white say no, I would say that was accurate. But I also think it’s misleading. One of the most incredible parts of the culture here is the willingness to make a big bet when you need to… There’s always opportunity, but right now, no.”

Panay emphasized that Amazon has no interest in releasing “just another phone” for the sake of it. If they ever return to your pocket, it will likely be because they’ve found a way to solve a problem or offer a service that existing giants like Apple and Samsung aren’t touching.

What’s Next for Amazon Hardware?

While a smartphone isn’t on the immediate horizon, it’s clear Amazon is more focused on where the next 10 years are going. With the explosion of generative AI and ambient computing, the “phone” of the future might not even look like a glass brick. Amazon seems more interested in exploring new form factors—think smart glasses, upgraded Echo devices, and deeper AI integration—rather than fighting an uphill battle in a saturated smartphone market.

The takeaway? Don’t expect an Amazon phone launch at the next Prime Day. But given Panay’s refusal to rule it out entirely, the company is clearly keeping its options open for when the “right bet” comes along.

Would you actually buy an AI-powered phone from Amazon, or is the memory of the Fire Phone still too fresh? Let us know what you think in the comments!
