The Nintendo Switch 2 is getting more expensive

Bad News for Gamers: The Nintendo Switch 2 is Getting a Price Hike

Usually, when a gaming console has been on the market for a year, we start looking forward to potential bundles or holiday discounts. Unfortunately, Nintendo is flipping the script. If you’ve been on the fence about picking up a Nintendo Switch 2, you might want to act fast—or prepare to dig a little deeper into your pockets.

The New Price Tag

Starting September 1, the Nintendo Switch 2 is seeing a $50 price increase in the US, bumping the MSRP from $449.99 up to $499.99. Nintendo cited changing ‘market conditions’ as the primary driver behind the decision, a phrase that usually translates to rising manufacturing costs and fluctuating supply chain expenses.

It’s not just the US feeling the sting, either. This is a global shift, and the numbers are climbing across several major markets:

  • Canada: Increasing by CAD 50
  • Europe: Increasing by €40
  • Japan: The hike hits even sooner, scheduled to go live on May 25

Success Followed by a Slower Forecast

This move is particularly interesting given how well the Switch 2 has performed since its debut. In its first full fiscal year, the console moved a staggering 19.86 million units. To put that into perspective, the original Nintendo Switch sold 15.05 million units in its debut year. By all accounts, the Switch 2 is a certified hit.

However, Nintendo seems to be bracing for a bit of a cooldown. Alongside the price announcement, the company lowered its sales forecast for the coming year to 16.5 million units. Whether that’s a direct result of the higher price point or simply a natural stabilization of the market remains to be seen, but one thing is clear: the era of the $450 Switch 2 is coming to an end.
