Taking the Plunge: My First 20km with the Tata Punch EV

I recently spent some quality time behind the wheel of the Tata Punch EV (specifically the Empowered Sunroof variant) on the streets of Bhopal. As someone who had never driven an electric vehicle before, I went in with a mix of curiosity and a healthy dose of range anxiety. But after a 20km test drive, my perspective on urban commuting has shifted quite a bit.

First Impressions: Silent and Zippy

The first thing that hits you is the silence. There’s no engine rumble—just a smooth, effortless glide. Navigating through Bhopal’s city traffic felt surprisingly easy. The Punch EV is compact enough to squeeze through tight spots, yet the interior doesn’t feel cramped. Plus, the instant acceleration you get with an EV is a total game-changer for quick overtakes and stop-and-go signals.

Tackling the Range Question

One of my biggest concerns was how far the car could actually go on a single charge. The team at the dealership broke it down in a way that actually made sense for daily driving:

  • 24 kWh Battery: Expect a real-world range of about 200 km in city conditions.
  • 35 kWh Battery: This one steps it up to roughly 280 km.

For a daily city commuter, these numbers are more than enough. When you factor in the home charger installation process—which they explained in detail—the logistics of owning an EV seem much less daunting than I originally thought.

Premium Touches and Practicality

The Empowered variant adds a level of polish that makes the car feel more premium than its exterior size might suggest. The sunroof is a great touch, adding an airy feel to the cabin, and the feature list is packed with tech that feels relevant rather than gimmicky. They also walked me through the current EV discounts, making the financial side of the switch look pretty attractive.

Final Thoughts

Driving the Punch EV felt like getting a glimpse of the future of city driving. It’s economical, easy to handle, and surprisingly fun. After this experience, I’m seriously leaning toward making the purchase. If you’re looking for a stress-free city runabout, this one definitely deserves a spot on your shortlist.
