Samsung Returns to the Top: Unpacking the Q1 Smartphone Market Shift

You’d think a lingering memory chip crisis would bring the smartphone industry to a grinding halt, but the latest data from Omdia suggests the market is tougher than it looks. Global smartphone shipments actually ticked up by 1% in the first quarter, reaching a total of 298.5 million units. But before we celebrate a full recovery, there is a bit of a catch: much of this growth was driven by ‘front-loading,’ where manufacturers aggressively pushed inventory into the market to beat anticipated hikes in component costs.

Q1 Global Smartphone Shipments Report Analysis

The big news this quarter is Samsung reclaiming its crown as the world’s leading smartphone brand. Shipping 65.4 million units—an 8% jump compared to last year—the South Korean tech giant now commands a 22% market share. This surge was largely fueled by a warm reception for the flagship Galaxy S26 series, alongside the mid-range momentum of the newly released Galaxy A37 and A57 models.

Apple Holds Strong While Xiaomi Faces Margin Pressure

Apple hasn’t gone far, sitting comfortably in second place with 60.4 million shipments. With a 10% year-over-year increase, the Cupertino giant holds about 20% of the global market. Interestingly, while the iPhone 17 series is performing well across the board, the ‘budget-friendly’ iPhone 17e is seeing a surprising amount of love in Europe and Japan. Meanwhile, Apple’s premium tier is thriving in China; the iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max saw a massive 42% spike in demand compared to previous models.

Samsung and Apple Market Share Comparison

On the other hand, Xiaomi had a rougher start to the year. Despite holding onto the third-place spot with 33.8 million shipments, the company saw a significant 19% drop. It seems the rising cost of parts is hitting Xiaomi’s thin margins harder than its competitors, making it difficult to maintain its usual aggressive pricing strategy.

The Mid-Market Outlook

The rest of the top five was rounded out by familiar names:

  • Oppo (including OnePlus and Realme): Took fourth place with 30.7 million shipments (10% market share).
  • vivo: Followed in fifth with 21.3 million shipments (7% market share).

Global Smartphone Market Share Trends 2026

While the Q1 numbers look promising on paper, Omdia analysts are warning of a ‘hangover’ period. Because vendors pushed so much stock into the channels early on to avoid high component prices, there is now a surplus of inventory sitting on shelves. Combined with consumer demand that remains somewhat lukewarm, the second half of 2026 could be a period of correction and adjustment for the mobile world.
