Apple Bucks the Trend: Why Mac Sales Surged While the PC Market Stumbled

If you look at the computer market data from the second quarter of this year, one thing stands out: Apple is clearly marching to the beat of its own drum. While most of the industry faced an uphill battle, a fresh report from IDC shows that Apple was the only major player to actually gain ground, with Mac shipments jumping by 10.1% compared to this time last year.

By the end of Q2, Apple had shipped 6.7 million Macs, capturing a 9.9% market share—up from the 6.1 million units and 8.5% share they held in Q2 2025. It’s a stark contrast to the rest of the pack. Many Windows PC manufacturers have been struggling lately, largely caught in a squeeze as rising costs for components, specifically RAM, have forced them to hike retail prices.

Looking at the broader landscape, the heavy hitters took a hit. Lenovo remains in the top spot, but their shipments slipped from 17 million to 16.6 million. Similarly, HP saw its numbers drop from 14.3 million to 13 million, while Dell followed with 9.3 million shipments. Even Asus, which managed a slight growth, only did so by a hair, yet still managed to nudge its market share up to 7.4% simply because the total market pool shrank.

A Challenging Road Ahead

Overall, the market contracted to 68.2 million units for the quarter, down about 4.9% from last year. With no immediate relief in sight for SSD and RAM pricing, analysts at IDC are bracing for a “sharp slowdown” as we head into the second half of 2026. Many vendors are already preparing for more price hikes as we move into 2027.

So, what was the secret to Apple’s resilience? A big part of the momentum came from the impressive reception of the MacBook Neo. Plus, Apple didn’t implement its own price increases until the very end of June, effectively insulating their Q2 sales from the initial sting of those hikes. It’s going to be interesting to see how the demand shifts in the coming months as those price adjustments fully factor into the Q3 numbers.
