For a while, tech enthusiasts were buzzing about the Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro, painting it as a sort of “mini-Ultra.” Between rumors of a specialized privacy display on its 6.47-inch screen and high-end expectations, it was easy to get carried away. However, recent reports are pulling us back to reality: the Pro and the Ultra are shaping up to be quite different devices.
While they might share the same main, ultra-wide, and selfie cameras, the most significant differentiator lies under the hood: the chipset.
The Chipset Divide
According to the latest reports from Korea, the Samsung Galaxy S27 Pro will utilize the Exynos 2700 chipset for the vast majority of the global market. North America, as is tradition, will likely stick with the Snapdragon line, but the distinction is clear—if you were hoping for the Snapdragon Elite chip found in the S27 Ultra, the Pro isn’t going to be your entry point. This further cements the idea that the S27 Pro is carving out its own lane rather than acting as a scaled-down flagship.
A New Approach to Performance and Cooling
The Exynos 2700 is built on Samsung’s SF2P node, which claims to deliver a 26% boost in power efficiency and a 15% increase in clock speeds compared to its predecessor. But beyond raw numbers, Samsung is shaking up the internal architecture. They are reportedly moving away from the traditional stacked design—where DRAM sits on top of the chipset—in favor of a side-by-side layout connected by a silicon interposer.
Why does this matter? Simply put, it’s a win for thermal management. In previous designs, the heat generated by the chipset had to fight its way through the DRAM before hitting the cooling block. By placing them side-by-side, Samsung aims to improve heat transfer, which could translate to more sustained performance during heavy gaming or multitasking.
What’s Next for the S27 Series?
While early benchmarks for the Exynos 2700 were a bit underwhelming, it’s worth noting those were likely early samples running at conservative clock speeds. With a potential max clock speed reaching up to 4.2GHz, there is still plenty of room for optimization. As for the rest of the lineup, the vanilla Galaxy S27 and the S27+ are expected to follow the same path as the Pro, utilizing the Exynos 2700 in most regions outside of North America and possibly China.
It’s clear now that if you want the absolute peak of power and the Snapdragon experience, the S27 Ultra remains the undisputed king. The S27 Pro, meanwhile, looks like a powerful alternative that plays by a different set of rules.
