BT and Verizon Join Forces to Redefine Global Enterprise Networking

In a major shakeup for the telecommunications sector, Verizon and BT Group have officially announced a strategic partnership to merge their international enterprise fixed-line operations into a fresh joint venture. While the deal is slated to close by 2027—pending the usual regulatory hurdles—it signals a significant pivot for both giants as they aim to build a platform specifically designed for a cloud-first, AI-driven landscape.

This will be a true 50-50 partnership, with the new entity serving a massive footprint of over 3,000 multinational organizations spanning more than 180 countries. To ensure the playing field remains balanced, Verizon is set to pay BT a cool $625 million in an equalization payment, securing equal voting rights and control within the new company.

Strategic Goals and Leadership

Why combine forces? According to both companies, the merger is all about scale. By pooling their global networks and service operations, they plan to create efficiencies that would be difficult to achieve alone. The infrastructure will also be leveraged to navigate increasingly complex local compliance and sovereignty regulations, while simultaneously speeding up the deployment of next-generation connectivity platforms.

To lead this venture, the companies have tapped Martijn Blanken, a seasoned veteran formerly of Telstra and KPN. He is scheduled to join BT on September 1 to start steering the ship ahead of the official transition.

Putting Years of Speculation to Rest

This announcement finally draws a line under years of industry chatter regarding the fate of BT International. Ever since BT CEO Allison Kirkby hinted back in 2024 that the division could be on the block as part of a wider cost-cutting initiative, the writing has been on the wall. The move to establish BT International as a separate business unit last year now clearly looks like a strategic precursor to this partnership.
