Living with the Vinfast VF6 Earth: Real-World Range, Hidden Hurdles, and Driving Vibes

Two weeks ago, I finally parked a new Vinfast VF6 Earth in my driveway. After putting some decent mileage on it, I’ve got a clear picture of what owning this EV is actually like. If you’re considering joining the Vinfast family, here is the honest truth about the range, the ‘perks,’ and the growing pains of their service network.

The Driving Experience & Performance

Let’s start with the good news: the car itself is a solid package. When it comes to how the VF6 handles the road, I have zero complaints. The performance is snappy, and the driving characteristics feel refined. It’s a comfortable, well-built machine that holds its own in traffic and on the open road.

The Range Reality Check

If you’re looking at the spec sheet, take those range numbers with a grain of salt. The VF6 is a bit of a heavy hitter—literally. It carries about 200kg of extra weight compared to many of its rivals with similar battery sizes, and you definitely feel that at the ‘pump.’

  • Mixed Driving (City/Highway): You can realistically expect between 300km and 320km.
  • The Sweet Spot: Hitting 350km is possible, but you’ll need a light foot and perfect conditions.
  • The Challenge: Anything beyond 350km requires what I call ‘god-level’ EV driving skills.

Weather plays a huge role here too. I’m currently dealing with a brutal summer, and the heat is definitely taking a toll on battery efficiency. You might see better results if you’re driving in a cooler climate, but for most of us, 300-ish is the number to keep in mind.

The ‘Free Charging’ Catch

Vinfast offers free charging for the first three years, which sounds like an incredible deal. In reality, it’s a bit of a half-truth. This benefit only applies to V-Green chargers. Currently, there are only about 125 of these chargers across all of India. Unless you happen to live right next to one or your daily commute perfectly aligns with a station, this perk is almost useless right now. Until Vinfast aggressively expands its network, don’t count on ‘free’ fuel for your road trips.

The Achilles Heel: Service and Support

This is where the honeymoon phase ends. While the sales team will promise you the moon, the after-sales reality is currently a bit of a mess. My experience with the home charger installation was a series of frustrations. The team confirmed installation dates and then simply didn’t show up—four separate times. It only got resolved after I threatened to return the equipment and demand a refund.

The service infrastructure feels like it’s in a state of chaos. At one point, I had to drive 40km to a TATA dealership just to get seat covers installed, only to be turned away because they ‘didn’t have the staff.’ It feels like Vinfast is in a massive rush to sell cars before they have the boots on the ground to support them. My advice? Drive carefully and pray nothing major breaks, because getting it fixed might take a lifetime.

Final Thoughts

The Vinfast VF6 Earth is a great car trapped in a struggling support system. If you can live with the realistic range and you have the patience to deal with a brand that is still finding its footing in the service department, it’s a rewarding drive. Just go in with your eyes wide open.
