Meta’s Threads celebrates 500 million users with a bunch of new features
Threads Hits 500 Million Users: Meta’s Rival to X Is Growing Up Fast
Remember when Threads was just the “new kid on the block” trying to capture the Twitter exodus? Those days are long gone. Meta’s microblogging platform has officially hit a massive milestone: 500 million monthly active users.
It’s a staggering number, especially considering the app has added roughly 100 million users since last August. While the seamless integration with Instagram certainly gave it a head start, Meta credits a newer addition for this recent surge: Communities.

Building Better Communities
To celebrate the half-billion mark, Threads is taking its Communities feature out of beta and giving it a serious glow-up. This isn’t just a label change; the platform is introducing several upgrades to make these niche groups feel more like a dedicated home for enthusiasts:
- Distinct Icons: Each community now gets its own unique visual identity.
- Communities Hub: A new dedicated spot in the main menu—located conveniently to the left of your feed—makes it easy to jump between your favorite topics.
- Community Progress: A transparent way to see how close a specific topic is to becoming an official community and what you can do to help it get there.
- Expanded Language Support: Native-language community tags are rolling out for Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
We’re also seeing an expansion of Live Chats. In the coming weeks, more communities will gain access to real-time conversations, including the ability to quote specific moments directly to your main feed to keep the discussion going.

Taking Control with “Your Algo”
Perhaps the most practical update is the introduction of Your Algo. Functioning as a complement to the existing “Dear Algo” feature, this tool gives you granular control over your feed. If you’re tired of seeing a specific topic—or if you want to dive deep into a trending interest for a few days—you can tell the algorithm exactly what you want.
The best part? You can set the duration for these preferences. Whether you want to prioritize or hide a topic for one, three, or seven days, the choice is yours. This unified hub allows you to manage all your algorithmic requests in one place, ensuring your feed actually reflects your current mood.
This feature is currently rolling out to users in the US, Canada, UK, Australia, and New Zealand. As Threads continues to distance itself from being a mere clone and leans into these unique community-driven features, it’s clear the platform is finally finding its own voice in the social media landscape.
