Sharp Aquos R11: A Unique Flagship That’s Hard to Ignore

While industry giants like Sony seem to be pulling back from the smartphone race, Sharp is quietly keeping things interesting. The new Sharp Aquos R11 has officially arrived as the successor to the R10, bringing a mix of exciting upgrades and a few puzzling trade-offs—like the unfortunate removal of the microSD card slot.

Stunning Display Tech

Sharp has always been a titan when it comes to screens, and the R11 doesn’t disappoint. It features a 6.5-inch Pro IGZO OLED panel that is nothing short of impressive. With a variable refresh rate ranging from 1Hz to 240Hz, it’s built for both efficiency and buttery-smooth scrolling. Even better, it’s officially the brightest display ever on an Aquos device, peaking at a staggering 3,600 nits—a 20% jump over its predecessor.

Built for the Real World

Design-wise, the R11 is a tank. Wrapped in Gorilla Glass Victus 2 and carrying both IP68/IP69 ratings, it’s built to handle water, dust, and daily wear. It even meets MIL-STD-810G/H standards for drop and shock resistance. For the clean-freaks out there, Sharp explicitly mentions that the phone can be cleaned with soap and alcohol wipes, which is a surprisingly practical touch.

Camera Upgrades

The imaging department sees a significant boost this year. Sharp has outfitted the rear with Leica HEKTOR lenses across a triple-camera setup. The star of the show is the brand-new 38.5MP telephoto lens (68mm, 2.9x zoom), complete with OIS and EIS. Flanked by a 50.3MP main sensor and a high-res 50.3MP ultra-wide, the hardware is clearly aiming to compete at the high end.

Performance and Endurance

Under the hood, you’ll find the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor, paired with a beefy 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage. To keep things cool during gaming or heavy multitasking, Sharp has enlarged the internal vapor chamber. While the 5,100mAh battery is the largest the company has ever squeezed into an Aquos phone, it’s only a modest 100mAh increase, and the 36W charging speed remains a bit leisurely by modern standards.

The “Aquarium” Aesthetic

Perhaps the most unique feature is the “Aquarium” light bar on the back. It’s more than just a notification LED; it’s an ambient light source that can simulate effects like a crackling fireplace or rustling water. Interestingly, it comes with custom, high-fidelity soundscapes designed to match the visuals, proving that Sharp isn’t afraid to try something offbeat.

Availability

If you’re eyeing one, you might have to plan a trip to Japan. The Aquos R11 launches in early July in Terracotta, Navy, and Ivory.
