Samsung is Packing Up: US Headquarters Moving from New Jersey to Texas

It looks like the Garden State is losing one of its biggest tech residents. After more than four decades of calling New Jersey home, Samsung has officially announced it’s moving its U.S. headquarters to Plano, Texas. It’s a massive shift that signals a new chapter for the electronics giant as it doubles down on its Southern footprint.

Ending a 40-Year New Jersey Legacy

For over 40 years, Samsung’s U.S. operations were anchored in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. Just recently, in 2024, the company moved its home base to a new spot in Englewood Cliffs. But that stay is going to be short-lived. According to reports from the Korea Times, the decision is final: the company is heading to the Lone Star State.

Why Texas? Follow the Chips

If you’ve been following the tech manufacturing world lately, this move probably doesn’t come as a huge surprise. Samsung has been pouring billions into Texas. Specifically, they’ve been building out massive semiconductor fabs in Taylor, which is just a few hours’ drive from their new Plano destination.

Back in 2024, Samsung snagged a $6.6 billion government subsidy to expand its foundry operations in Texas. By moving their headquarters to Plano—just north of Dallas—they’re positioning their leadership right in the heart of their most critical manufacturing investments.

A Strategic Play for Big Contracts

There is also a significant strategic angle here involving Apple. As the U.S. government pushes for more “onshore” manufacturing, Apple is actively looking to diversify its chip supply chain away from TSMC. They’ve recently been scouting Intel and Samsung as potential partners, with Apple executives even touring Samsung’s Taylor foundry not too long ago. Being centrally located in Texas makes Samsung a much more convenient partner for these high-stakes American manufacturing deals.

What Happens to the Employees?

Relocating a headquarters is no small feat, especially when it involves about 1,000 employees. While a small team will remain in New Jersey to handle regional operations, the vast majority of the Englewood Cliffs workforce is expected to be reassigned to Plano.

An anonymous company official noted that the goal is to have the move finalized by the end of the year. It’s a fast-tracked transition, but with Samsung’s Networks Innovation Center already up and running in Plano, the foundation for the move is already in place.

This relocation marks the end of an era for the Northeast tech corridor, but for Texas, it’s another major win in its quest to become the nation’s premier tech hub.
